Why Does My AC Keep Turning On and Off Every Few Minutes?

Your air conditioner should complete a full cooling cycle before it shuts down. When the system starts, runs for a few minutes, stops, and then comes back on soon afterward, it is experiencing short cycling. A well-functioning AC often operates for approximately fifteen to twenty minutes per cycle. This gives the equipment enough time to lower the temperature throughout the home, distribute conditioned air, and remove excess humidity. Short cycles prevent the system from completing these jobs effectively. You may notice that the room near the thermostat feels cool while other areas remain uncomfortable. The home can warm up again shortly after the unit stops, and the air may feel sticky because the AC is not running long enough to remove sufficient moisture.
